While everyone and their yorkshire terriers are writing, discussing, tweeting and telegramming Kanye West’s appalling bumrush during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at last night’s VMAs, let’s not forget one thing: He is Kanye West. Not only did he bum rush the stage at 2006’s MTV Europe VMAs after not winning for Best Video (boo-frickity-hoo), but last season, ‘Saturday Night Live’ dedicated an entire skit around his egotistical award ceremony tirades, which he actually partook in. He is the same man who took time out of his busy schedule whilst on tour to retaliate against an innocent Entertainment Weekly editor who gave Kanye’s concert a sheer B+. He is also the same man who decided to take it upon himself to turn a televised charity event for the victims of Katrina into a personal rant about our former President Bush. The man doesn’t know when to drop a subject or address it during his own time. But again, he’s Kanye West.
But I digress. The real reason I’m writing this is not to give Kanye even more acknowledgement (although, despite his shoddy ways, he is still an amazing musician), but to honor Beyoncé for not only being the HBIC at the VMAs, but for being the classiest HBIC at the VMAs, to boot..
Listen, we all know Beyoncé is prone to making an event all about her, but she does it in such an inconspicuous and endearing way that you can’t help but admire and root for her. Take for example last night; Beyoncé could have very easily kept the spotlight on her after winning Video of the Year, but she decided to hand the limelight over to Taylor Swift whose time to shine was cut short because of – well — you know. Beyoncé just stood back and let Taylor have her moment, and after the moment was over, the two walked off the stage together. This solidified Beyoncé’s elegance and put her on the radar without being cocky and out of line. Get it girl!
“They told me to stand by the side of the stage and I didn’t really know what was going to go down, but I thought it was so wonderful and gracious of [Beyoncé] to do what she’s always done,” Taylor Swift said to RollingStone.com. “She’s always been a great person before anything else. Before the talented artist, the superstar, she’s always been a great person and I just, I thought I couldn’t love Beyoncé more tonight, then tonight happened and it was just wonderful.”
(Kanye, take note. THIS is how you make a statement.)
Anyway, Beyoncé’s act of kindness has gotten me a bit verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves while I regroup… I’ll give you a topic: Radio City is neither a radio nor a city. Discuss.
But if that topic doesn’t tickle your fancy, how about we re-watch the classiest moment from the 2009 VMAs and hail to Beysus together? Ready, Set, Praise: Beyoncé Wins Video Of The Year (click to watch)
