It seems as though Carrie Underwood may have been out of the music scene for a while, but she’s back in the game with her latest album, “Play On.” The “American Idol” winner’s third album picks up where the ferris wheel of her “Carnival Ride” left off.
Even though, I would consider myself a dedicated Country music fan, Carrie Underwood has always been one of my favorite artists. There’s something about a Carrie Underwood album that leaves us feeling inspired and having the album on repeat. Is it how her music not only satisfies the musical tastes of Country fans, but of music fans in general, through the “real life” lyrics and beautiful melodies? Is it her loveable personality and relatability? Who knows. One thing’s for sure….We love us some Carrie Underwood!
Cowboy Casanova: The album’s lead single, ‘Cowboy Casanova,’ is like the sequel to ‘Before He Cheats.’ This is yet another female anthem that Carrie can add to her growing list. The track, which Underwood co-wrote, has both the Country “twang” and the Pop sound that both Country and Pop fans love. “He’s a good time cowboy casanova/ Leaning up against the record machine/ Looks like a cool drink of water/ But he’s candy-coated misery.” The song, which is climbing the charts, is currently #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the Billboard Country charts.
Mama’s Song: The album’s second promotional single, ‘Mama’s Song,’ was written by Carrie Underwood and American Idol judge, Kara DioGuardi. This is one of the most beautiful songs on “Play On.” This lovely track is definitely a song for all of the mama’s girls out there. She sings about believing that the the man in her life is the one and will treat her right, just like her mama has always wanted. “Mama you taught me to do the right things/ So now you have to let your baby fly/ You’ve given me everything that I will need/ To make it through this crazy thing called life/ And I know you watch me grow up and always want whats best for me/ And I think I found the answer to your prayers.” The track sold more than 30,000 copies in it’s debut week.
Change: This is another beautiful track on the album. (I know that I’ve used that word over and over again to describe the songs on this album, but I can’t help it. These songs really are beautiful!) This uplifiting power ballad is about one’s power to change the world around them. “The smallest things can make all the difference/ Love is alive/ Don’t listen to them when they say/ You’re just a fool/ Just a fool to believe you can change the world.” It kind of has a ‘So Small’ feel to it, and we love that!
This Time: The track starts off with some good old fashioned Country music, that puts a smile on your face and keeps your foot tapping to the undeniably catchy Country “twang.” ‘This Time’ is one of our favorite tracks on the album for that reason! “I just want to tell ya/ That my heart is bursting at the seams/ I can’t wait want another minute/ Life is short/ Love is sweet/ Ain’t no time like this time, baby.”
After our first play of the album, we had it on repeat! We love Carrie Underwood, and can’t wait to see which songs she will be releasing as singles! Welcome back, Carrie! We look forward to seeing you top the charts once again!
